Where Did Chess Originate: Understand The Background Of The Game

By Dianne Crane

Most people who enjoy chess may have been wondering where did chess originate. The board game originated from India around the 6th century AD. At that time, the game was known as Chaturanga. It involves the use of a board and various pieces that are arranged on the board. The game is played by two people and it requires strategy. It involves capturing as many of your opponents pieces as possible. To win the game, you have to capture your opponents king or make the 'king' immobile.

The game was then spread to other parts of the world by soldiers and merchants who traveled to other parts of the world. The game spread to Persia (present day Iran) from India. It was then spread to other Arabic countries and it eventually found it's way to Europe. The basic principles of the game remained similar even though the names used for the game were changed.

Some people played the game for sport while others played it seriously. So seriously was it taken that some landlords had their laborers, who they were playing against, beheaded when the landlord worn a game. The first moves that you make when the game starts plays a big role in determining whether you will win or loose a game.

Chess tournaments were organized and even a world class championship was held for the first time during the nineteenth century. The game gained more stability as chess theory developed and an international association of the game was formed. This gave people more confidence in playing the game.

The game became popular during the 20th century and was recognized professionally. The media began to document important games that were played. With time, the game was computerized, which made it even more popular as you could play the game against the computer. Most professional players can win a game against the computer while most amateurs will have a hard time doing so.

The pieces used to play the game represents the medieval lifestyle. For instance, pawns represent serfs who were hired by landlords to work on their farms. Serfs were at the bottom of the social ladder and they could easily be dispensed off with. They could be killed so as to protect landlords. Most serfs rarely lived to old age.

The queen symbolizes how powerful queens were in the past. This was especially if the queen was favored by the King. The queen could influence any major decision that was made by the king. While some queens worked towards the good of their kings, others plotted against the king.

The background on where did chess originate shows that through time, this game has generally been played by close acquaintances. Take advantage of the game to spend some quality time with your loved ones. The game can be played anywhere convenient as it is not bulky to carry around. It can be enjoyed both indoors and outdoors.
